The month wouldn't be complete without another battery technology breakthrough, and this time it's the turn of lithium-sulfur technology.
Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are experimenting with a lithium-sulfur battery design with twice the specific energy of lithium-ion batteries, and a usefully long life under repeated charging and discharging cycles.
According to Green Car Congress, such batteries would also be cheaper and safer than lithium-ion designs--without the overheating and fire issues that have made the news over the last few years.
In a paper in the ACS journal Nano Letters, the researchers explained how they've overcome one of the main limitations of existing lithium-sulfur designs--a poor life cycle.
Normally, lithium polysulfide particles dissolve in the electrolyte during discharging and react with the lithium anode, forming a barrier layer. The conversion reaction under charging and discharging can also cause the sulfur electrode to swell and contract, causing damage.

Workers Burned In Industrial Accident

Three workers have suffered burns in an accident at the Fremont, California assembly plant, where Tesla Motors builds its Model S electric car.
According to the company, a low-pressure aluminum casting press failed on Wednesday afternoon, spilling hot metal onto the workers.
All three employees were immediately taken to Valley Medical Center in San Jose with second-degree burns. The Fremont Fire Department dismissed initial reports that there was a fire at the plant, and that the incident is being considered an industrial accident. California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health will investigate the incident.

Car of the year 2014.2014 Cadillac CTS

When battery maker A123 Systems went bankrupt, it seemed to be just one in a long line of failed energy startups--albeit one with some high-profile customers.
Stalled battery production after A123's bankruptcy is considered one of the main catalyst's for Fisker's litany of struggles, while electric-car enthusiasts wondered what would happen to cars like the Chevrolet Spark EV, powered by A123 batteries.
Now, are things different under Chinese ownership?
Several companies expressed interest but in the end only two came away with the spoils--Chinese group Wanxiang won through with a $256.6 million bid. A123's military business was sold separately to Navitas Systems. One of those was the highly-rated Chevrolet Spark EV, while BMW fits A123 batteries in its 3-Series and 5-Series hybrids.

Ken Block has done it again, and even though this particular dead horse has now
suffered at least six beatings, it's always fun to see Block try to one-up himself in a wickedly powerful turbo AWD rally car.

A Massachusetts politician has put forth a proposal to allow local police to enter homes without a warrant in order to inspect whether gun owners are properly storing their firearms. The idea was floated by Swampsott Selectman Barry Greenfield, who expressed frustration about the Newtown school massacre in the neighboring state of Connecticut and in other cases where people have obtained their parents’ guns to carry out shootings.
“We need the ability to enforce the state law,” Greenfield said, according to theSwampscott Patch.

Researchers from Boise State University in Idaho created a “phantom road” at a site in the Boise Foothills that is a stopover for migratory birds in the fall. They put up 15 speakers in Douglas fir trees and played recorded sounds of a road at intervals of four days — four days on, four days off. They then counted birds at three locations along their phantom road and three locations nearby where the road noises couldn’t be heard.
“When the noise was on,” they write, “fewer birds were present near the phantom road.” Bird abundance declined by more than a quarter near the make-believe road, and two species — thecedar waxwing and yellow warbler — almost completely avoided it. Only one species, theCassin’s finch, was more likely to be seen near the phantom road than in the quiet areas.
